» The FAQ:

General:
Q: I get the Error: 'This game is currently unavailable' when connecting through Steam
A: Very common, and can unfortunately be any number of things, I'm afraid. If you restarted Steam and it still won't load, check to make sure that all of your files in your VikingAssault folder are not set to be read only and that Steam is properly updated. To force Steam to update, delete the Clientregistry.blob file in your Steam folder and restart your application. If this fails to fix your problem, it could possibly be from your virus scanner.
.

Q: My screen freezes when trying to start a Viking Assault game.
A: It's most likely that the Node Graph is being build... this happens the first time you run a particular map, and can make it seem as if Half-Life has frozen permanently. Try waiting for 5 minutes or so. It's also possible that it's a weird Half-Life bug that only seems to effect a few people (including me... happens in other mods too). Everything actually loads and runs OK, but you just see a blank screen. To fix it, wait for quite a while so the map can finish loading, then press Escape twice. The HL menu should pop up. Click "Resume Game".

Q: I'm unable to connect to any server because it says my Steam UserID Ticket has expired!
A: Does it occur on any other server? This problem can be server related, or even Steam related, and not be your fault. Try to log out and log back in, or try again in a few minutes. Check the Steam Status Page

If you get this message when you try to connect to your own dedicated server thats behind a router, try connecting through your router's internal IP address (192.168.X.XXX:XXXXX), for example.

Q: I'm getting the error "Reliable Channel Overflow"
A: This particular error message can be quite common in Viking Assault if your computer and/or internet connection can not handle the amount of monsters and entities in the map. Although not as common as it used to be, if your still on 56k you'll probably be experiencing this. Make sure your not running any P2P software and you've performed a spyware/virus scanned recently. This can also be attributed to the server.

Q: My game crashed with this error message: "S_Findname: Out of sfx_t"
A: When Half-Life reaches 512 cached sounds it causes the engine to stop. On dedicated servers, you can rejoin after the crash, but if you are hosting a non-dedicated server it will dump all the clients. If maps are designed correctly, this crash should never occur... the problem is that the number of monster types used in a map needs to be kept low. The other problem is that a few maps do use too many sounds (it's hard to judge, I admit).

If you are using Steam you should never encounter this problem as Valve has increased the limit from 512 to 1024 in the latest version of Steam. This is one of the major reasons we highly recommend that you use Steam to connect to play Viking Assault.

Q: I'm running a server with Metamod, and the Barnacle/Minigun/Uzi are crashing my server whenever someone uses them.
A: You need to download the Hacked Viking Assault 3.0 Metamod available from the Files page. It contains all of the new Viking Assault 3.0 entities.

Q: Is there a Linux version of Viking Assault 3.0 available for download?
A: There is no Linux port available for Viking Assault 3.0, unfortunately, but there is a Linux version for Viking Assault 3.5 currently in the works to be released around the same time as the Windows files..

Q: When I try to connect to a server, it gives me a "map differs from server" error
A: Either your map is newer or older to the server's, or there is some kind of version mismatch. If it is important, you can delete the map out of your VikingAssault/maps/ folder and allow the server to download it to your install. Just remember that it might not always be your fault, it could be that the server has an outdated version of the map that you are trying to play

Q: What do I need to know to run a server behind a router?
A: Please see this thread

Q: Where can I find more Viking Assault maps?
A: If you already have all the maps from the Files page, try Map Showcase on the Forums. Additionally, visit some of our community websites available in our Links section.

Q: Can you make a Gamespy tab for Viking Assault?
A: There already is one. It's included with Viking Assault (VikingAssault.qst in VikingAssault\ dir).

Gameplay:

Q: How do you use the "Banana Bomb"?
A: Press the Alternate Fire button while holding ten hand grenades. The Banana Bomb does not work on all maps.

Q: Can you play through the normal, Half-Life single-player maps (by Valve) in Viking Assault?
A: Yes. For more information, check the Single-Player Maps page.

Q: I've been playing through the Valve single-player maps, and at some point, I can't get the the next map for some reason/I try to go to the next map, and end up in a previous map!/other bug or problem
A: Make sure that you've downloaded and installed the Improved SP Map Support update from the Files page. You must run a Server Install on the machine you're starting the game on, even to play offline. If the problem you encountered is not mentioned on the page, please report it in the Bugs section of the Forums.

Q: Why did you remove cheats?
A: Cheats still exist, they're just changed. You can only use cheats when "maxplayers" is set to "2", however (sv_cheats must also be 1). The cheats are: godmode 1 (or 0), giveall, ghost 1 (or 0), cl_noclip 1 (or 0), cl_notarget 1 (or 0).

Q: Why did you remove friendly-fire?
A: Team-killing was a really big problem on net servers - Most games ended up just being deathmatch with monsters.

Q: There're some monsters with different skins (or possibly electric effects) that don't shoot at me!
A: Viking Assault contains friendly monsters which are set by the mappers -- don't shoot them, they're there to help you. Check your HUD, friendly monsters info will show in green text, enemies in red.

Q: My mp3's are not appearing ingame!
A: Placing your mp3 files into the /mp3 folder will not simply add them to your game. You need to run the Viking Assault MP3 List Generator available in your Start Menu under Program Files/Viking Assault to compile a list for Viking Assault to recognize where your files are located.

Q: Someone is standing still in a doorway and no-one can get past!
A: Start a vote using the commandmenu, or a key bound to Start Vote, and VoteKill the player. If that fails, drag them out of the way by hitting them with your crowbar and walking backwards.

If they continue to presist their oh so funny and original behavior, joining a different server will always solve the problem :-) . If you believe that they have the ambition to repeat this on another server, take a screenshot of their SteamID in your console (don't just copy straight out of the console, as this is easily exploitable) and one or two pictures of them in the act of blocking and post it in our Server Hole to be reviewed by server administrations for possible banning on their servers.

Q: Why sometimes can I freely Gauss jump and overtimes it doesn't work?
A: Gauss jumping is set in the maps .cfg file, as it was a multiplayer only feature it would spoil the gameplay in most singleplayer maps.

Q: Why don't the human grunts drop their weapons anymore?
A: If you can imagine about 30 shotguns laying on the ground after a firefight then you can probibaly imagine why :-). Not only will it lag very heavily but it will unbalance the game by giving players a near endless supply of weaponry, which might not always be the intent of the creator of the map.

Q: Why does Barney try to kill you in VikingAssault1.bsp?
A: The players are sort of the bad-guys in VikingAssault1/2 (well, whether they're actually bad or not depends on the individual player, but either way, they're working for the bad-guys. G-man didn't give them much choice in the matter). You're there to steal a strange crystal, and it was Barnabus' job to try to stop you.

Q: Why did you use Viking Assault for the name of the mod? It's stupid!
A: I know that Viking Assault is a stupid name :). It was a temporary name for a map (VikingAssault1.bsp, mod was originally based entirely on the map), and I never thought of a better name... (P.S., in case anyone wondered, even if I knew of a better one, certainly not going to change the name in the future... it's too late now. Anyway, Viking Assault's not bad once you get used to it :).

Future of Viking Assault:

Q: Is Viking Assault still in development?
A: Viking Assault is currently scheduled to release it's final version in the very near future, with one or two small patches afterwards to clear up any remaining bugs. The team's next concern will be Viking Assault 2 for the Half Life 2 engine. It has been an amazing run since January 1999, and we hope to be able to move onto bigger and better things.

Q: When will the next version be released?
A: When it's done.

Q: Can I join the Viking Assault team?
A: Any specific openings will be posted with the news.

Q: Do the Viking Assault team have any future projects?
A: The next project for the Viking Assault team will be a cooperative version of Neil Manke's They Hunger mod, and of course, Viking Assault Version 3.5.

Q: Why is Viking Assault 3.5 taking so long?
A: We do understand that it is taking a long time to release 3.5, and our fans are growing impatient, but with large projects come large problems, and things don't always work out the way we hope them to do. Team members understand that Viking Assault can not always take priority over other things in their lives, as a majority of our members are either currently in college or are working for actual commercial game companies/other mod teams. We are always trying to keep everyone informed of what is being done by releasing promotional videos and changelogs, and although there is not always a new update every week, you can be sure that there is work being done.

Just remember the golden rule that the longer it takes, the better it will be, and Viking Assault wants to end it's Half Life 1 lifecycle with a bang. We just ask that you support the team when the problems arise.

Viking Assault and 3rd Party Mods:
Q: Can I play other mods cooperatively?
A: Yes and no. Most single player packs are mods, they have to be turned on via the custom game menu. Halflife can only run one mod at a time so you can either run the single player mod or Viking Assault, not both. Single player levels that do not have any custom code may be playable in Viking Assault by installing them like a normal Viking Assault map, however you will need to create a CFG file for each of the maps in the level pack if you want suitable weapons in later maps (Consult the CFG guide). Maps not intended for use with Viking Assault may have gameplay flaws, such as a door closing and blocking the route for other players. For these reasons you are better off looking for conversions of single player packs to Viking Assault, such as ETC and Gut Reaction, see the Files page for more information.

Q: Does Viking Assault support Opposing Force?
A: Many Opposing Force monsters and weapons have been added as features to Viking Assault 3.0, but currently there is no playable version of the Opposing Force singleplayer maps. But don't fret, as there are quite a few people currently working to convert Opposing Force to Viking Assault.

Q: What is EntMod?
A: Entmod is a metamod plugin that allows you to manipulate, create, and copy entities in a map using new commands and a "manipulator gun". Think of it as the Garry's Mod of Half Life 1.

Although not everyone agrees with Entmod (some prefer playing Viking Assault the way it was supposed to be played), it has become a favorite mod to install on your server. For more information, please see http://www.adminop.net.

Q: What is Ripent?
A: Ripent is a small command-line based program included with Zoner's Half Life Tools for the purpose of making small tweaks and optimizations to maps without having to spend a few hours to recompile it. Server administrators have discovered that it is possible to "ripent" maps on their servers and add unique changes to the maps to enhance or customize their server without having to have the clients redownload the map or have "map differs from server" errors.

For more information, including a how-to, please see this thread on the forums for more information.

Q: What is AMX Mod?
A: AMX Mod/AMX Mod X is a metamod plugin for server administrators that gives them more commands and possibilities for administrating and customizing their servers. This includes the ability to ban, kick, gag, mute, slap, kill, and more, with the ability to give trusted users administrative privileges. AMX Mod X is the updated version of AMX Mod and has an advanced scripting feature superior to AMX Mod.

Viking Assault Editing:
Q: Where can I get the Viking Assault .fgd file from?
A: It comes with the Viking Assault installer... look for "sven-coop.fgd" in your Half-Life\VikingAssault\ folder.

Q: I want to map for Viking Assault, how do I go about this?
A: Check the Information for Map Makers page, and the Submit a Map page.
